What is an “influencer in 2021?” According to Instagram, an influencer is “a social media personality who is popular on social media (such as Instagram, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook) and whose content is regularly shared and consumed by other people.”
For Instagram, that means someone who posts high quality, engaging content regularly, reaches a large audience, and regularly interacts with followers.
So, it’s not as simple as posting photos and tagging brands you love.
In 2021, your audience expects you to provide value, not just post pretty photos.
How do you turn following and engagement into dollars?
The average number of followers a social media user has? It’s 100,000. The average number of followers you need to make a living? 20,000.
That’s not a typo.
When I started getting paid to promote other peoples’ stuff, the posts that got the most “engagement” (i.e., likes and comments) were those with the most followers.
Eventually, I started noticing another pattern, The very best posts were the ones with the most followers AND engagement.
I wasn’t getting paid to promote posts that had both the most followers and the least engagement.
Here’s how it works.
If somebody sees a post that has a lot of followers AND a lot of engagement, they think, “Wow, this person has lots of fans. They may sell me stuff.”
If they see a post that has either a lot of followers or a lot of engagement, they think, “Wow, this person has a lot of fans. They might sell me stuff.”
But if you see a post that has both a lot of followers and a lot of engagement, they will think, “Wow, this person has a lot of fans AND lots of engagement. They must know what they’re doing. Maybe they sell stuff.”
Why does this matter? Because the highest-paying clients are the ones who think they know what they’re doing.
(The irony is, if anybody had told me this when I started promoting other peoples’ stuff, I would have told them they were nuts.)
But it works.
So how many followers do you need to make a living? 20,000.
But it’s my rule, not the rule. There are lots of exceptions. Some social media stars have more than a million followers, and they somehow manage to make a living.
The easiest way to make money on Instagram is by working with brands on sponsored posts. To do this, you’ll need to create a dedicated business account, and you’ll need to follow a very strict set of guidelines.
For example, each sponsored post needs to conform to the rules that Instagram lays out for sponsored posts. These rules include a number of requirements, including that the brand you’re working with posts about the sponsored post, and that you follow the brand’s guidelines, which include providing the brand with a list of hashtags to use.
Once you’ve met these requirements, you can work with brands on sponsored posts. When a brand contacts you, they’ll usually offer a flat fee or per-post rate. They can provide you with a rate sheet, and you can decide how much you want to make.
You may also be able to find brands that want to work with you on sponsored posts, based on the type of content you post. For example, if you post photos of products, you may be able to help brands find new customers, and you can get paid when they make a sale.
Sponsored posts can be a good way to make money on Instagram, but they aren’t the only way. You can also make money on sponsored posts by working with influencers, or people who have large Instagram followings.
If you’re an influencer, you can charge brands per post, or per Instagram post. The payment may be a flat fee or a percentage of the post’s ad revenue.
You can also make money on Instagram by creating your own e-commerce store and using the site to drive sales.
To start selling products, you’ll need to pick an e-commerce platform. These platforms provide a custom online store for you and let you connect your store to your Instagram account.
Shopify is a popular e-commerce platform, and if you want to use Instagram to drive sales, you may be able to find a deal.
The issue for brands and businesses is figuring out which influencers are right for them.
To narrow it down, brands can use influencers’ social-media profiles, like Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube, and go through their follower lists.
Influencers can also follow and browse through brands’ social-media accounts online.
“Brands should start by asking influencers why they want to work with a brand.
For example, do they want to reach new demographics, or do they just want to make more money?
That conversation will validate whether the partnership is right,” says Jeff Millman, chief executive officer of Influence Central, an influencer marketing platform.
A lot of influencers are on social media because of their passion for something. Sometimes, that passion leads them to say things online that they wouldn’t say face-to-face.
Celebrities are especially vulnerable to this. If you are a celebrity, your brand is important, and people expect you to be perfect.
That expectation creates a lot of pressure to “be on,” and it makes celebrities susceptible to being misleading.
Influencers don’t have to deal with that. They don’t have to worry about getting fired from their jobs. They don’t have to resign and risk being blacklisted by media companies.
Influencers don’t have to worry about anything other than being authentic. As long as they are true to themselves, they can do whatever they want, and brands will pay attention.
In another word, you have to take your time to choose what is right for you.
